Why Internet of things matters to virtual reality

By John Huang

I recently read an article on “is your refrigerator spying on you”. Which makes me think of Internet of things and how devices in our everyday live will become smarter and may or may not spy on us.

According to the definition, Internet of things is the pervasive presence of a variety of devices, which, through unique addressing schemes, are able to interact and cooperate with each other to reach common goals. Simply put, it is about connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet. For example, smartphones, headphones, wearable devices and etc. In 2015, there was estimated 5 billion devices connected to the Internet. By 2020 this number will go up to 26 billion connects smart object, devices, cars, satellites and etc. Thus, anything that can be connected will be connected.

In a recent survey, 83% of experts answered yes to: “will the Internet of Things have widespread and beneficial effects on the everyday lives of the public by 2025”. Most of them said, the Internet of things and wearable computing will progress significantly between now and 2025. One of these devices is virtual reality.

VR is at its introduction stage of its product lifecycle, with big companies entering the market (Facebook, PlayStation) and technologies being ready to support it. Virtual Reality is about to enter people’s homes. Did you know? Virtual reality was introduced in the 1960s and failed because technology enablers were not there! So how does Virtual Reality relate to the Internet of Things? Well, what makes today’s and future VR device so successful is the ability to connect to the Internet. In order to have a virtual reality experience, you need animations, sound, images and so on. Furthermore, to make this work in a shared social environment and allow people to experience it in real time, it will take a lot of power and speed.

This is  why Internet of things matters to virtual reality.

  1. I share your fear of personal privacy being disrupted by evolving technology John. However for means of this post; Do you think that VR technology will be integrated into the average household just like smart tvs were?

  2. The internet of things matter to virtual reality. Currently, virtual reality has become more popular than ever before. Besides, with the development of technology and the increasing of internet of things, virtual reality possesses its potential market on a large scale. Virtual reality is a kind of experience through eye goggles or other devices to have the electronic simulations for the environments, which enables the users to communicate in three-dimensional way (Coates, 1992). The internet of things is gaining its popularity in this modern wireless telecommunication age and its fundamental concept is the pervasive presence around us with a variety of objects such as devices like mobiles, sensors and so on. Through these devices and unique addressing schemes, people can communicate with each other conveniently. In other words, the internet of things is able to make the virtual reality common among various people in the reality and make people communication more convenient than ever before. However, the internet of things also brings trouble to people. As a matter of fact, I think although the existence of the internet of things will facilitate the communication among people, it still has the potential to violate people’s privacy. What’s more, every activity has the possibility to be recorded on the internet of things. Thus, the privacy of people is exposed to public, which is possible to be applied by those criminals and cause the instability in the society. The internet of things is important to virtual reality device because the internet of things makes it possible to connect the Internet and it makes the communication process possible. Therefore, the internet of things is dispensable for virtual reality but it is necessary for people to attach great importance to the privacy problems in the process of developing the internet of things in the long run.
